Background notes: Shamrock Bones is a minor character character in the Disney Universe, who was used mostly in the 1970s. He first appeared in Walt Disney's Comics & Stories #143 from 1952, and was used in three stories that year. The creator or creators of the character has not been possible to identify yet. After the first three stories Shamrock Bones was not seen until 1967, when he appeared in a story. Then in late 1969, he started to appear on a regular basis in the American stories, for no apparent reason. Soon stories with Shamrock Bones was produced in other countries, especially in Brazil in the beginning and later in the Netherlands. Just as sudden as inexplicably as the character started occurring in 1969, the production stopped in 1976. A few stories appeared after 1976, the last story being published in 1984, but in effect the character vanished from the stories.

This however was not the last that was seen of the character. In the Netherlands, the character was used in crime puzzles, where the reader should solve the crime/riddle. Essentially the same as the series Dick Danger by Werner Wejp-Olsen which is still being produced. The crime puzzles ran in the Dutch and German Disney publications from 1981 to 1989, with a single puzzle being published in 1992. The puzzle was the last time the character was seen, so far.

The character has not appeared outside comics. It has been claimed by some that he appeared in the DuckTales episode Dr. Jekyll & Mr. McDuck as Shedlock Jones. Both the visuals and the demeanor of Shedlock Jones is quite different from Shamrock Bones. Being Sherlock Homes analogues they both share some traits with the most popular (Hollywood) perception of Sherlock Holmes (the hat, the coat, the pipe and the magnifying glass as used by Basil Rathbone), but they are not the same character.
