The Guns of Navarone (1961)

The Guns of Navarone The basic story
Two powerful German canons, in a heavily fortified bunker inside a volcano, control the seas past the Greek island of Navarone, making the evacuation of British troops on a neighboring island impossible. Due to the placement, an air attack is useless, so a team of soldiers, each with their specialty, is sent to blow up the canons from inside the fortification.

For this they are getting help from the Greek resistance, but even with the help of the resistance, getting into the country and out to the island is both difficult and dangerous.

And when they get to Navarone, the really difficult and dangerous part of the mission starts.

How was it?
Outstanding movie! One of the things that struck me, when I saw the movie, was how beautiful the visual side was. It is a solid story about a WWII mission, moving along nicely (the story, that is, the mission in the movie is not going smoothly). Good characters, good actors, some really intense visual storytelling, and a story that makes sense.

Highly recommended!
