Story:
Original story:
Garth and his twin sister Ayla were out flying near the planet Korbal when the space-flyer ran out of power and they had to land. The planet was considered dangerous and shunned due to the lightning monsters living there. Seeing a chance to getting the energy cells recharged, Garth tried to trick the monsters into discharging lightning bolts at the space-flyers antenna. Instead of getting the energy cells recharged, the monsters beasts discharged the electrical energy at Garth and Ayla and gave them electrical powers [ Adventure Comics #308].

Retcon:
Garth, Mekt and Ayla were on Kobal and were exposed to the discharges of the lightning monsters, when they tried to get the flier's fuel cells recharged [Adventure Comics #331].

After Lightning Lad's apparent death in the Legion of Super-Heroes [Adventure Comics #304], Ayla took Garth's place in the coffin when the Legion was visiting his resting place. She had disguised herself as Garth and pretended to wake up to rejoin the Legion. She was however quickly revealed and got a place in the Legion as Lightning Lass [Adventure Comics #308].

Nura Nal, who was the strongest precog on Naltor, saw the death of several member of the Legion of Super-Heroes in a vision, an went to Earth to stop the vision for coming through. She joined the Legion, taking the name Dream Girl, and tried to trick the other legionnaires to expel the endangered heroes. As a part of the plan, she also altered Ayla's lightning powers, using Naltorean science. At first Ayla thought she lad lost her powers, but they had been changed into the ability to make objects lighter instead [Adventure Comics #317].

In 2984, when the Legion of Super-Villains took over the control of the planet Orando, Mekt tried to make Ayla join his group. When she refused, he tried to kill her using his electrical powers, or at least make her suffer [Legion of Super-Heroes (1984 series) #3]. Instead of killing her, he changed her powers back to being electrical [Legion of Super-Heroes (1984 series) #4].

Ayla Ranzz was erased from existence along with the rest of the World when Mordru and the Time Trapper rewrote history and the sorceress Glorith only succeeded partially in recreating the original time line. The result was a new and very similar time line, but not the same [Legion of Super-Heroes (1989 series) #5].
