Story:
Original story:
Garth and his brother Mekt was out exploring the on the planet Korbal when they encountered a Lightning Monster. The monster hit them with its electrical charges resulting in Garth and Mekt getting electrical powers [Superman (first series) #147].

First retcon:
Garth and his twin sister Ayla were out flying near the planet Korbal when the space-flyer ran out of power and they had to land. The planet was considered dangerous and shunned due to the lightning monsters living there. Seeing a chance to getting the energy cells recharged, Garth tried to trick the monsters into discharging lightning bolts at the space-flyers antenna. Instead of getting the energy cells recharged, the monsters beasts discharged the electrical energy at Garth and Ayla and gave them electrical powers [Adventure Comics #308].

Second retcon:
Garth, Mekt and Ayla were on Kobal and were exposed to the discharges of the lightning monsters, when they tried to get the flier's fuel cells recharged [Adventure Comics #331].

Garth stayed active as Lightning Lad in the Legion of Super-Heroes until the birth of his and Imra's first son Graym in 2984. He and Imra stayed with the Legion, but only in a supportive role [Legion of Super-Heroes (1984 series) #3].


Skills & abilities: Electrical manipilation; control and generation of electrical fields, including the ability to project bolts of electrical energy similar to lightning. Garth has completed the Legion's personal combat training.
