Story: The Daxamite Lar Gand was visiting Krypton shortly before its destruction. He crash landed on the planet and met Jor-El who suggested that he went to Earth instead as he knew Krypton was about to explode. Jor-El repaired the rocket ship and gave Lar Gand the directions [Superboy #89].

For reasons unknown, Lar Gand's rocket ship did not go directly to Earth but drifted in space for years before crash landing. Superboy who saw the rocket ship entering the atmosphere, saved the unconscious Lar Gand, and due to the instructions written by Jor-El and a medallion he got from Lara he assumed that the unconscious figure was his brother. Lar Gand had lost his memory in the crash and as he had super-powers like Superboy, he assumed Superboy was right. He moved in with the Kent family and took the Earth name Bob Cobb. His Kryptonean name Mon-El was given to him by Superboy, as El was the family name and he was found on a Monday [Superboy #89].

Superboy noticed there were several things pointing towards Mon-El not being a Kryptonean, and thought he was an impostor. Trying to reveal Mon-El as an impostor, he exposed Mon-El to lead which was toxic to the Daxamite. The exposure to lead made some of Mon-El's memories return, but it also made so sick, that Superboy had to send him to the Phantom Zone to save his life [Superboy #89].

Mon-El stayed in the Phantom Zone for 1000 years until Saturn Girl invented Serum XY-4, an antidote for Mon-El's lead poisoning. In the first version, the effect was only temporary and Mon-El had to return to the Phantom Zone after helping with defeating a Luthor robot. Saving the Legion members earned him a membership of the Legion of Super-Heroes without having to pass the usual initiation tests [Adventure Comics #300].

Brainiac 5 found a way to make the effect of the antidote permanent shortly after. Before going public as having been cured however, Mon-El spent some time posing as Marvel Lad and competed for membership of the Legion of Super-Heroes under that name. As he was accepted into the Legion, he revealed that he was really Mon-El [Adventure Comics #305].

Skills & abilities: Flight, super-strength, super-speed, invulnerability, super breath, super-vision, and super-hearing from being from an extremely high gravity planet under a red sun. Due to his vulnerability to lead, Lar takes a serum to avoid lead poisoning. A side effect to the serum is that he keeps his powers on high gravity worlds like Daxam and under red suns.
