Garth and his brother Mekt was out exploring the on the planet Korbal when they encountered a Lightning Monster. The monster hit them with its electrical charges resulting in Garth and Mekt getting electrical powers [Superman (first series) #147].

Retcon:
The story placing Garth, Mekt and Ayla on Kobal at the same time not found yet.


Skills & abilities: Mekt can project bolts of electrical energy similar to lightning with devastating force. His control is limited in regards to the amount of energy projected in any given bolt, as he is letting his subconscious and emotions dominate his powers. He is physically powerful for an ordinary man, but he is relatively unpracticed in personal combat.
