Background notes: This version of Lex Luthor is the Silver Age version. When the Silver Age started for DC Comics (generally set to October 1956 with the introduction of the Silver Age Flash in Showcase #4), the story of Superman and Lex Luthor was rewritten. It wasn't a clean break like after Crisis on Infinite Earths when the current version of Lex Luthor was introduced. In the stories Luthor continued as he had been, but this version was given a past in Smallville with Superboy while the original retconned into being the Earth-2 version, just like Superman from the same time became Superman of Earth-2. The introduction of Lex Luthor in the Superboy stories in Adventure Comics #271 from 1960 is often referred to as the first appearance of the Silver Age Lex Luthor, as it is really the point where a difference between the two versions is established.
