Background notes: In Waldemar Bonsels book from 1912, there was no grasshopper named Flip. There was a carefree grasshopper that Maja met, and it is makes sense to assume that Flip is the grasshopper from the book. The name Flip came with the cartoon series Mitsubachi Māya no Bōken/Die Biene Maja (German voice by Manfred Lichtenfeld) from 1975, where he also got his visual design by character designer Susumu Shiraume. In the original story, Maja only met the grasshopper briefly, whereas in the cartoon, he was one of the regular characters.

When the cartoon was adapted into comics in 1976, Flip was also transferred to comics. Later, when the series was transferred to games, Flip was also transferred to games. The first appearance of Flip was in the game Maya The Bee & Her Friends for Game Boy Color from 1999.

Like Maja and Willi, Flip has been a popular character for merchandise, and has been on wide variety of items like figurines, pillows, plush toys, a stamp, and board games.
