Wife and children mentioned from when he was alive
Base of operations:
After a battle at Cleveland County, Arkasas on April 25th, 1864, the surgeon Robert Dickering was taking a break after a long days work. He was standing at the edge of the camp when he was knocked unconcious by a group of men who wanted to get into the camp without being seen. When he woke up, the army had retreated, leaving him behind enemy lines [Red Circle: The Hangman #1].
While trying to catch up with his unit, he found a confederate soldier in need of medical aid. He helped the blinded soldier but was delayed so he ran into a group of soldiers from the confederate army. The major in charge thought the was a spy, and sentensed him to death by hanging. As he was sitting on a horse with a noose around his neck, ready to die, he suddenly found himself in a fiery place with a black man with glowing eyes. The stranger offered him a chance to survive. He would be walking the Earth, drawn to the torment of accused souls and determine ther innocence or guilt. If guilty he would have to punish them and if they were innocent he would have to do what was necessary to save their lives. He would have to do this until he was stopped by someone as powerful as the stranger or the end of the World. Dickering accepted and went back to the real World as the horse he was sitting on started running. The rope around his neck broke and he escaped into the woods [Red Circle: The Hangman #1].
From then on, the Hangman appeared at night punishing the guilty and saving the innocent [Red Circle: The Hangman #1].
The time from 1864 to 2009 has not been revealed, but in 2009 he had a job as a surgeon in San Francisco, and he was a part of the team that saved Joe Higgins and turned him into the Shield [Red Circle: The Shield #1].
