Background notes: When Oswald was created the first cartoon Poor Papa in 1927, Disney and Iwerks made him old, unruly and slovenly. However, Universal wanted a younger character and Disney and Iwerks were pressed into changing Oswald into a younger and slimmer version with the personality of a naughty boy. This resulted in the cartoon Trolley Troubles being released July 4, 1927 as the first cartoon. Poor Papa was released more than a later on August 8, 1928.

Oswald's first appearance in comics was New Fun Comics #1 from 1935. It is presently unknown if his appearance in the first comics looked like his cartoon appearance, but by his next appearances in Four Color Comics, starting with #102 in 1946, his appearance was more like Disney's rabbits i.e. fluffy and cute.
