Story: Nikolas Kamarov grew up in the frigid wastes of Siberia. His father was a purged Soviet test pilot and his mother a woman of aristocratic background. As a young man, he saw gymnastics as a way out, a means by which he could overcome his family's shame and experience warmer climes. He worked hard and was eventually rewarded by getting on the Soviet Olympic team. While being on the Olympic team, he tried to defect on a visit to Florida, but he was captured [StormWatch Sourcebook #1].

Being famous, the authorities did not dare to put him in prison. Instead he was sent to serve in the army. Here Kamarov used his influence to be assigned to Espeznatz. The plan was to collect sufficient information to somehow get back at the ones who had taken away his dream of freedom. Instead he was wounded in Kabul, Afghanistan during the ill fated Soviet occupation, and anomalies in his medical charts were noticed and forwarded to SkyWatch. When the Soviet Union started to come apart at the seams, SkyWatch, monitoring the situation, decided it was time to go in and activate him [StormWatch Sourcebook #1].

Kamarov became the StormWatch operative known as Winter.

When StormWatch investigated what they thought was an asteroid, SkyWatch got infested with Aliens that killed most of the crew. The WildC.A.T.S. saved the remaining crew and the plan was to return with reinforcements, but Winter apparently realized that there was only one way to get rid of the Aliens. Instead of escaping with the others and try to fight the Aliens later, he stayed behind and flew the space station into the sun [WildC.A.T.S./Aliens #1]. The destruction of SkyWatch and death of Winter and other StormWatch operatives was what led to StormWatch being discontinued and the formation of the Authority [StormWatch (vol. 2) #].

Winter was believed to be dead when SkyWatch burned up in the sun, but the Authority found him inside the Sun a while after. Winter's body had been destroyed, but his powers had adapted and he had been able to survive by absorbing energy from the Sun. The solar energy body caused him so much pain, that it drove him insane and he attacked Earth, which is why the Authority found him. Unable to save him at the time, the Engineer trapped him in a small cage and placed him in the Sun, where he could survive [Authority: Scorched Earth].

With the changes in the nature of the universe from Captain Atom's visit [Captain Atom: Armageddon #8], the new Doctor was able to extract him, and to everyone's surprise also Fuji, Hellstrike and Fahrenheit [StormWatch PHD #5]. Shortly after getting back, Winter joined the new StormWatch PHD [WorldStorm #2].

Skills & abilities: Winter has the ability to absorb, convert and direct/project what is called positive and negative energy. The nature of his powers made SkyWatch scientists speculate, that he may somehow act as a channel between this universe and others, governed by other laws of physics,
