Background notes: Chief O'Hara is one the the supporting characters from Disney that has been around for ages and is easily recognized by readers all over the World without actually being famous in any way. O'Hara first appeared in the story
Mickey Mouse Outwits the Phantom Blot from 1939 which also featured the first appearance of the Phantom Blot. Along with Goofy, Detective Casey and Shamrock Bones, Mickey and Chief O'Hara chased and outsmarted villains like the Phantom Blot, Peg-leg Pete & Catfoot, and Idgit the Midget and Dangerous Dan McBoo and today 60+ years later they are still at it, though not as much as before. The production of stories slowed down in the late 1990s but there are still several stories produced every year. The original stories were produced in USA like most other stories, and like all the other US Disney comics, the production was moved to Europe and South America slowly but surely from the early 1970s.
In cartoons Chief O'Hara first appeared in
Who Framed Roger Rabbit from 1988. This was only a short cameo like most other cartoon characters. His first real appearance in cartoons was
Mickey Foils the Phantom Blot, which appeared in
Mickey Mouse Works in 1999. Having Chief O'Hara making his first real appearance in cartoons in this story is rather fitting as it is a retelling of
Mickey Mouse Outwits the Phantom Blot, the first appearance of the chief in comics. Chief O'Hara hasn't been used much in cartoons but he appears from time to time in
House of Mouse and
Mickey's House of Villains. In the cartoons the voice of Chief O'Hara has been done by Corey Burton.
Besides his appearance in cartoons, Chief O'Hara has only occured as a few merchandize items like figurines and a silver bell.
